Weekly Update – Saint Patrick’s Parade, COVE Announcement, Dr. Jeff Dahn

What a great and very busy week! I joined the Nova Scotia Liberal Party’s lively contingent in the 10th annual Halifax Saint Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday. The temperatures were freezing but spirits were high and we had a great time seeing all the folks in their best green duds along the parade route.

I had several meetings with constituents this week, to discuss a range of issues from family doctors and healthcare to infrastructure and active transportation. I also met with Naomi Rosenfeld, the new Executive Director of the Atlantic Jewish Council to discuss opportunities for collaboration with government.

On Friday I had a great meeting with Jayme Melrose of Common Roots Urban Farm. We chatted about urban farming on Citadel Hill, and the Farm Steward program that will be expanded this year in part thanks to an $11, 300 grant received from the province’s Department of Seniors. I shared with her some of my mesclun mix seeds to take back to the farm! I also dropped in to visit Dr. Jeff Dahn at Dalhousie to deliver a certificate of congratulations on his recent Herzberg Gold Medal award, the highest honour awarded in the sciences, on behalf of the Premier and the province.

On Thursday, I headed to the site of the Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship, better known as COVE, for an announcement that Irving is investing $4.52 million in the newly established ocean innovation centre. It’s so great to see the private sector collaborating with governments and our post-secondary institutions to drive success in the ocean tech sector.

Thanks for reading my update – catch ya next week, Halifax Chebucto!
